Leading South African Expert and an Experienced Attorney in all aspects of Mining Law, Environmental Law and Mine Health and Safety
Lili Nupen has over the years built up a solid reputation as a respected authority on all aspects of mining law, environmental law as well as mine health and safety compliance. Her expertise and opinions are sought by local and international clients alike and she has advised on a number of industry ‘firsts’.
Having spent the last 8 years at Malan Scholes Inc (as a Director in the mining and environmental department) she is now entering an exciting new chapter in her life with the opening of her own law firm, Nupen Staude de Vries Inc. Lili’s mining experience is extensive, and it spans the full life cycle of a mine from inception to acquisition through to disposal or closure. These experiences mean that she has a unique perspective on the mining industry with insight into the issues and challenges which allow her to guide and advise her clients on workable solutions to navigate through the complex ‘compliance minefield’.
She holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree with a postgraduate LLB, both from the University of Cape Town and in 2008, Lili was admitted as an attorney to the High Court of South Africa. In addition to this, she also holds a dual MBA (from HEC (Paris) and WBS) as well as a post-graduate certificate in Mining and Prospecting Law from the University of Witwatersrand.
Lili says, “mining is a unique and challenging industry to work in and no two days are ever the same. You can say what you like about the mining industry, but the reality is that mining and minerals are central to our modern-day life. However, a series of major amendments to existing mining legislation have occurred in recent years and it is very easy to quickly get overwhelmed and lost in a sea of regulation and legislation. That is why I am very excited about joining the Alusani® Course Leader faculty as we will be developing a wide range of mining-focused training courses that will assist the industry and bring clarity to a variety of issues.”
