Construction Claims
Construction claims...from hundreds of thousands to many millions of Rands to even the smallest of claims - they are in short time consuming and divert valuable and scarce resources away from where they are needed most and they are destructive to what may seem like even the most solid of business relationships.
In the ideal world a construction project can be completed without there ever being a claim and in many instances this is exactly what happens. However this 2-day training course will teach you how to prepare, present and defend any construction claim.

Construction Dispute Resolution
Most people involved in the construction industry know how to control costs, schedules and safety. But many people don’t know how to control and resolve conflict and disputes. Sadly, conflict and disputes are par for the course on most construction projects, so as they have the potential to spiral out of control it is imperative that you have an idea of how to effectively prevent and resolve them before they derail your project and negatively impact on project time and cost.
One of the very first steps in controlling disputes and conflicts is to understand the nature of the dispute cycle. Disputes start with a problem and can develop into difference of opinion, which then tend to degenerate into disagreements, disputes and conflict that can often require the services of a lawyer or result in the worst case in actual court appearance, which waste valuable time and money…so this training course has been designed and developed to teach everything that you need to know in order to break the cycle and resolve problems early on before they get out of control.
This two-day training course has been specifically designed to equip each and every Course Participant with a practical understanding and working knowledge of the contractual provisions and management mechanisms that are specified in each of the standard forms of construction contracts. And it will also cover in detail a range of best practices, problem solving tools, dispute & conflict control tools as well as real-time dispute resolution techniques.
Through interactive discussions we will explore using a series of factual case studies all of the issues surrounding conflict and dispute management procedures, prevention and resolution. You will leave this training course with an appreciation as well as an understanding of the causes of conflict and disputes that often arise through the execution of construction projects. But more importantly you will learn how to break the cycle and help avoid and manage conflicts and disputes on construction projects in the future.

Construction Estimating
Major cost overruns on any construction project are frequently due to poor forecasting of the costs and inherent risks in a contract at tender stage. And this in turn means that poor estimating can impact the economic feasibility of any proposed construction project.
That is why estimating is considered to be one of the most important of all of the practical aspects of construction management. There are many, sometimes complex issues to consider when estimating the cost of a construction project and there are a number of key elements that come into play with each of these issues which can dramatically shape the entire estimating equation.
Over-estimating may result in your client quite literally getting the shock of their life when it actually comes to the tender process and in extreme cases the project actually being abandoned. On the flipside under-estimating may have dire consequences for you as the Estimator and in the long run severely hamper your confidence as well as your reputation.
When companies are reliant on the tender process to acquire their work, tendering with confidence in the outcome is vital – so learning how to estimate accurately and consistently is a must!
Estimating is not simply number crunching to get a figure. But it is a multi-faceted process that must be followed in order to ensure that all risks are accounted for.
So this training course offers the A-Z of construction estimating and will give all Course Participants a thorough grounding in the principles and best practices of construction estimating in terms of real-life construction projects.
Using proven case studies, all the procedures that are involved in the compiling a viable estimate for construction projects are covered in detail, and you will leave this training course understanding how to prepare an accurate estimate for typical construction projects.

Effective Construction Contract Management & Administration
Any building project, no matter the contract type has to undergo 3 specific stages namely the design, tender and then of course the actual physical construction phases. And in any of the stages, the effective management and administration of contracts is critical in order to manage the design specifications, contractual agreements, competitive tendering, evaluation, cost control, variations, final accounts, claims and even disputes.
So, it goes without saying that the poor management of any of these aspects can lead to unnecessary delays, claims and disputes and eventually higher construction costs...which you want to avoid at all costs!
This hands-on and practical 2-day training course has been designed to take you through the entire project life cycle and contract administration tasks and it will equip you with the skills you need to determine the inherent risks associated with each stage of the life cycle. You will also learn how to use all of the tools at your disposal to avoid cost and time over-runs, without the need to sacrifice quality.
In addition, this course will explore and incorporate all of the technical and procedural competencies that cover in detail the dealings between the contracting parties and concerned stakeholders. It will also combine both the commercial and contractual necessities which will support and promote the performance of the entire project from the time the contract is awarded until the work has been completed, payment has been made and any disputes settled.

JBCC Suite of Contracts
The construction industry (more so than any other) is governed by a series of comprehensive contracts. Following on from our highly successful training courses that focus on the use of FIDIC and NEC respectively we now turn our attention to the JBCC Suite of Contracts. And although it is widely used throughout the South African construction industry and its use had increased substantially over the last few years, there still remains a lot of uncertainty regarding all the ins and outs with regards to the mechanics and day-to-day use of the JBCC Suite of Contracts.
So, this 2-day training course offers you something quite different as it takes a unique 360º look at the entire JBCC Suite of Contracts and literally leaves no stone unturned. And this will allow for a focussed discussion on the key provisions of the contracts, as well as an objective view of its practical application in order to highlight both their strengths and weaknesses.
This training course has been researched and developed with one aim in mind...rather than simply running through the clauses in their numerical sequence we intend progressing through the stages of the project from start to completion and then dealing with the relevant clauses as they apply to each of these stages. And wherever possible we will illustrate each application by way of real-life case studies.

New Engineering Contract
The NEC family of Standard Form Contracts is used by major organisations across the length and breadth of South Africa and is gaining popularity with flagship projects internationally such as London 2012. And this modern family of contracts is fast becoming a standard for private companies, parastatals and public sector organisations alike. So, this 2-day training course is highly recommended for anyone involved in working with the NEC family of Standard Form Contracts as the aim of this training course is to equip all Course Participants with a detailed understanding and practical working knowledge of the mechanics and day-to-day functions of the NEC.
In addition the training course will also cover in detail the very necessary practical commercial skills that you need, as well as the general principles of the law of contract. And in order to lay the foundation for the entire course we will take a detailed look at a historical perspective of the NEC and will consider the history and the events that stimulated its development. In particular we will focus on the Latham and Egan Reports and developments in the international construction industry as well as its applicability in the South African construction industry today, given the recommendations of the Construction Industry Development Board.

Tendering for Public Sector Contracts
Public sector procurement is such a broad term and it can cover anything from multi-billion Rand road upgrade deals down to contracts to clean the dustbins at local libraries or supply flowers to a town hall. Every Government department from national, provincial and local levels has its own procurement officers and each have their own procurement requirements, and to add to all of this the purchasing procedures will vary according to the value and complexity involved in each particular process. Add to this that the procedures are also dictated to by the level of Government you are dealing with and all this gets really confusing. So, this 2-day training course has been researched and developed with one thing in mind, to cover everything that you need to know about how to find, bid, win and then service Government contracts.
